Hello, hi, how r u?
I hope you’ve had a great week! A week later and I’m still basking in the love I felt at our first party last week. But before I start rambling on about that, I have a question…
Did you get this email ok? Does it look any better or worse? I suppose by virtue of reading this question, you got it, but I want to know about any problems or issues you might have with it. You see, I’ve made a very boring but very important change this week. I’ve said bon voyage to Mailchimp, which was both increasingly ineffective, and increasingly expensive. Not a brilliant combination. So I’ve moved us to substack, please let me know if you find any issues.
Now, on to the good stuff. The music this week: as I said, the party was sublime, so good to see some of you, and heartmeltingly wonderful to have a dance together. This week’s mixtape is thirty songs from the party last week, so those that came can relive it, and those that didn’t can catch an aural glimpse. It goes from soothing ambient, through soul, boogie, disco, house, techno, and then back to Earth again with a little soother at the end. After 18 months away from the dance floor, it took me into outer orbit last week. Huge thank you to all that came.
Oh, and the next party is already in the planning phase, so watch this space.
There’s also a slightly bumper TL:DR Section below too, and some gold to be had at that.
Notes to return soon. Watch this space.
See you on the dancefloor,
Jed x
PS. If you're new here then this is how it works. Here’s what you’ve missed so far.
TL;DR Section 🌪
Stuff to hear
Green-House - Music For Living Spaces
Sleaford Mods and The Bug collaborate (thanks Eamon!) (and accompanying tQ interview with them both too)
Kraig Kilby - Satori (thanks Alex!)
Jay Richford & Gary Stevan - Feelings
Stuff to read
Ammar Kalia interviewing my new favourite artist Nala Sinephro
This week Four Tet launched a very reasonable public attack on Domino over rights, royalties, and ownership - and this essay on the Baffler is an excellent background on why this is going to be happening a lot more often
(Well kind of read) this photo essay on the history of Ministry
The Great Cubicle Escape by Cal Newport for the New Yorker is a wonderful treatise on escaping the freneticism of life and living a little more slowly, enriched by nature
I’ve just started reading Lipstick Traces by Greil Marcus, and it’s a fantastic delve into the impact that punk had on everything. It’s also more akin to the Fisher stuff I’ve been reading in that it’s quite dense in places, but has lit my brain up (where I’ve understood bits, at least!) (sidenote: this looks interesting too)
Tom Misch is readying a dancefloor-focused alias
Stuff to watch
The Birth of Punjabi Garage is mandatory viewing (and then watch Yung Singh’s Boiler Room set again)
Little Simz’ excellent I Love You, I Hate You has inspired a new film that’s must watch
1971, the new documentary series on the cultural explosion of 1971. It’s on AppleTV (yes I’m watching everything I can on it before bumping my sub)
Northern Soul. It’s a few years old now, and I initially snubbed it as it’s a fictitious account, but I gave it a watch last weekend and it’s brilliant
Stuff to do
Buy It Was Always There Vol 1, on Martyn’s excellent 3024
Subscribe to First Floor. It just gets better and better.
